White paws thudded against the ground, pink tongue lolling out of a narrow muzzle. A large male wolf was trotting through the trees, white ears pricked atop his head. Bright green orbs moved over the lands as he moved quickly through the woods. His muscles were throbbing as he finally began to slow his pace. He had been running for a long while and he was beginning to get tired. But he knew that he couldn't stop and rest yet, not until he got to the border of the pack lands and sought out the alpha. He needed to be sure he could stay here before he did anything else. After all it wasn't polite to enter into someone else's lands and take a rest without asking permission. Though if the alpha denied him admittance into the lands, the brute supposed he could always rest not far from the border. He wasn't a threat, just needed a rest. And possibly a home if he found a suitable place that he felt comfortable in.
As he slowed to a quick walk his muscles relaxed a bit, his tongue sliding back into his mouth. His ears twitched around his head and he lifted his muzzle, scenting the air. His movement stopped abruptly and he took a cautious step backwards, realizing he was at the edge of the pack land. He was glad there was no guard standing here, otherwise he probably would have been attacked on the spot. Most other wolves he came into contact with didn't appreciate anyone stepping over the boundary to their lands unannounced. He lowered his nose to the ground and sniffed around a bit, sneezing as dirt entered his nostrils. He growled softly and rubbed his nose with his paw. He hadn't meant to sniff that hard, and now the dirt was irritating the inside of his nose. He snorted a few times and then shook his head, his nose clean of the dirt now. Lifting his head back up, he scented once more before finally deciding that there was only one alpha. A lone male had laid claim on these lands, his nose wrinkling at the thought.
His large, fluffy tail thrashed behind him as he stood at the borders. He was still deciding whether he wanted to even bother calling for the alpha or just moving on. He had done rather good so far of avoiding females, but if he was going to find a home he would be unable to do so. A long sigh escaped his lips as he rump fell to the ground. He would just have to grin and bare it, because he didn't feel like going any further at this moment. He decided it would be best to be fair and at least give this pack a chance. If things didn't work out he could always leave, just like he had before.
His white maw lifted, pointing up towards the sky and parting slightly. A loud song rang from his throat as he sat by the border. The song was melodic, and rang through the trees and over the lands. At the end of his call, he lowered his head and licked his lips. He was a bit anxious to see exactly what this alpha was like. Surely he had to be a strong wolf to hold claim over a vast territory like this. His muscles tightened as he remained seated on his rump. Large white tail curling around the side of his body and tapping against the ground. He desperately wanted to lay down and simply relax, but until he met the alpha he wasn't going to let his guard down. So he sat like a good brute, his ears perked straight up listening for any sounds around him that might signal the alpha's approach.

You see the same darn thing It's just a different day And no one really knows why this is happening But it's happening
The crimson sun started to ascend on the lucious shores. As Jessi's moon washed talons hit the lose earth, launching the vixen forward. Ivory limbs shot forward with such grace they seemed to play a melody for all so her. She raised the limbs high off the ground only to set them softly and gently back upon the lose sand. Smooth and almost silent they set forth a drumming beat. Her sleek and fluffy tail seemed to flow weightless in the wake behind her.
And everywhere you go it's just a different place You get the same dark feeling See the same sad faces No one really cares that this is happening
The wind caught her scent and carried it away so it could reach all. Her scent was unmistakable, it was sweet and soothing and carried that of rain upon the land. For the land she had always loved and spent countless hours in. She ran and ran till the earth devoured the sun and the abyss above was light pink. Only then did this porcelain dove stop and rest to survey the terrain. Everything came through icy blue pools that held her in the present.
We come into this world And We are all the same And in that moment there's no one to blame
Her icy pools searched the land in front of her, it was what she excepted and desired. The peak of where she stood was serene, quiet, and perfect. She let cream limbs lead the way to the edge. The edge was a straight drop off into the abyss below. She stood there looking with the sight granted by maple lamps, seemed to devour the abyss beyond.
But the world is black And hearts are cold And there's no hope That's what we're told
She was on a mission that no one could save her from, a mission that demanded her very life. She would not even call it a mission because she thought it too pathetic. And this way no one knew she would not risk her pride for such a pathetic excuse as this. No, she wished no one would find out that’s why she made the terrors journey. And now her twisted past had caught up to her. And it drove her to this her suicidal lullaby.
And we can't go back It won't be the same Forever changed By the things we've seen
So she sat there upon the edge as she was flickering between that of life and that of death. She shivered as a chilling wind brushed past her reminding her of the cold terrain where her bloody past occured. And it was this bloody past that drove her to this. But she stood where she sand with her blue orbs that looked out. They seemed to travel beyond this none world it was far beyond any thing one could see to a world where the past repeats its self trying to right itself of these wrongs.
Are you listening? But living in this world Growing colder everyday Nothing can stay perfect Now I see

Wind lightly blew the surrounding trees. The wood creaked and snapped in a manner so relaxing for one who would actually take the time to listen. Tall golden grass littered a large meadow, they sang to each other, danced with the larger foliage and simply moved like a sea of color. Earth below the paws that slowly moved through these surroundings crumbled and formed around them, hugging the creature and begging it to stay. The sea of grass bended to the canine, rubbing up against his muscular shoulders each chance they got. His white pelt painted with black strips stuck out like a sore thumb, but who would care? Who would even look his way? No one was around for miles. A predator such as his-self hadn’t been in the area for days. Just the way it should be.
Large ears twitched, listening to the wind howl and whisper to the plant life all around. A few birds dared play close to the white beast, but would soon after move away when they noticed him. Red of his eyes were intensified by the black rings around them and as he scanned the darker parts of the forest around him, the male couldn’t help but think one thing. It was boring! Sure looking at different kinds of plants was fun. But where was the chase? He’d been sleeping for most of the day and now had a burst of energy.
With a pause, his head turned to a distant sound of a howl. A soothing sound in a way, and relief to know not everyone was stupid enough to just walk in and cause trouble with him. In this forest he was a alpha, a god in the guys of some, born with swift movement that normally went unnoticed to most. And it was about time he’d carve his name into the world with a pack that could out live the monsters he had once before encountered. So his stroll soon turned him towards the sound of the howl, each step made the muscles on his body ripple.
Slowly he made his way towards the lone male who had found himself just outside of his territory. The white figure of the alpha could be seen off in the distance from where the male had been residing, his deep red eyes focused on the other canine. It seemed his small patrol and walk about of his new lands would soon proven to be more entertaining. Slowly and quietly, the male moved in. His tail flagged high in the air, a show that he was indeed the one this loner had called for.
Mareth continued towards Jasper until A sharp sound caught his attention. He paused for a moment, strong head turning to try and spot what had cause that small sound. It was most likely another had wondered into his territory but this time unannounced. Something he really didn’t want to hear at the moment. His soft ears pinpointed the direction of the disturbance in his lands. But rather then go after who ever it was that dared to tug on his strings the stripped male walked back towards the lone male. He seemed to prance as his large body glided across the earth.
Once he finally got to were the other white male awaited Mareth carefully scanned the area for any other intruder or attack. Or just whatever it was that had caused such a noise. Body ready to kill if needed, he was rather calm. Twitching his ears he simply looked Jasper over. Waiting the male to speak first.

As he sat patiently at the borders of the pack lands, his mind began to wander. He was wondering where his old pack was, if they were still together. The alpha was getting old even when he had lived there, so he doubted the old male was still living. Even if he was, there was no chance he would still be leading the pack. But thinking about the old pack brought memories of Jessa back and only brought him pain. His nose wrinkled and he growled softly for letting himself think about such things. The last thing he needed was to be upset or anxious when meeting the alpha of a strange pack. His tail thrashed on the ground and he lifted off his rear, pacing back and forth now feeling impatient. He never liked having to sit around and wait for anyone or anything. More of a got get it type of male himself, he was very anxious as he waited for this alpha.
His auds twitched and he turned his head quickly at a strange sound echoed through the forest around him. His fur bristled for a minute as he stopped his movement, listening intently to find where the sound had come from. Bright green orbs stared out into the trees as he listened around him for the approaching wolf. His muscles tensed and he took an unnerving step backwards as he stood and waited for the alpha to appear. His nostrils flared and he snorted before shaking out his pelt, trying to relax himself. His fur settled back down, though it still looked rather fluffy and thick. Of course being an arctic wolf, his pelt was naturally thick and fluffy.
Finally a figure began to form not far off from where he was standing, pure white pelt vibrant against the colors of the forest. His muscles tensed with anxiety as he stared at the white pelt, it was almost like looking in a mirror. He let a small sigh escaped his lips and lowered his head respectfully as he came closer to him. But he noticed a sudden pause in the other brute's movement. Another sound coming from somewhere around the two males. Jasper's auds pricked up on his head and he looked around slowly, wondering if it was another wolf or some other creature. His nostrils flared and he snorted as a strange new scent carried across the wind. The scent was very feminine, and most definitely belonged to a wolf. His green orbs turned back to the alpha as he walked backwards towards Jasper. He tilted his head to the side and watched carefully, surprised that this brute so easily walked backwards without tripping or hitting anything.
He stared at the alpha as he turned towards him and simply stood there. His head lowered respectfully and he kept his eyes locked on the brute. "Good evening Sir. I am Jasper" he greeted the alpha politely. He had always been taught that manners meant more then anything else when greeting an alpha. "I have come to your lands in search of a home" he explained simply. His tail hung limply behind him as he stared at the alpha, waiting for a reaction. The brute could attack him for no reason, or he could accept Jasper. There was nothing Jasper could do but stand here and wait.

[bg=000000][atrb=width,450,true][atrb=border,0,true] The winds had picked up and were blowing the pelt of the small female around a little bit. She closed her eyes and yawned some. She then sat down and curled her tail around her paws. She was sitting on the edge just mere inches from falling. She took in the deep breath, that was when the scent of the alpha hit her nose. She stood up and looked around. She turned this way and that and then smirked some as she sat there contently. "Hmm i shoudl really go down and speak with the alpha though i would rather him come to me, but might as well go to him" she said as she headed down the cliff side. Her cream paws carried her down the cliff side. She stopped just a few yards from the bottom and sighed some.
She missed her brother, the last pack they were in didn't go very well. He started a fight with the alpha and then got kicked out and well that was enough of that tale. She took another deep breath and then threw her head up into the sky and let out a soft howl. It was just letting the alpha know she was on her way to him. She leaped off the side of the cliff and landed into the soft grass and looked at it some. She then headed towards the male. Her paws kicking up grass as she ran threw the land. It was her favorite thing to do, run on in the forest.
She soon slowed her place and made her way towards the alpha. She made her way closer to the alpha and then lowered her frame and flicked her ears back "I am Ice Breaker, Or Ice, I seek acceptance to your pack." her voice not much louder then a whisper. It was something Ice couldn't help it, she was always a soft spoken wolf and it drove a lot of wolves nuts because they always had to sit ever so close to her to hear what she was saying. She hated speaking loudly, she never liked it. She took a deep breath and then allowed her eyes to dance over to the other male that was just a few feet from her. She looked over him, he was stunning, but then again the alpha was just as good looking. it then hit her, she was the only female. OH jsut great she thought as she stood there just looking at the males.
she knew for sure that in the end the two would probably fight over her. It always happened, though she never stuck around to long to find out who won. She took in a deep breath and then sat down and curled her white fluffy tail around her paws and flicked her ears around her head as she picked up noises that were unfamiliar to her.

He kept his mind clear as he looked the other white male over. Funny. In all his wonderings he’d never once met a pure white canine. Sure he’d seen some white and brown or in his case white and black. Yet this male was a first, all white with green eyes. He also seemed like he knew what the hell he was doing. Mareth secretly hated small willed and pathetically helpless wolves, he’d never say anything or turn one away, no he wasn’t a dick like most. Mareth would just turn his head and ignore someone he disliked, until it got to the point of breaking then he’d just run the annoyance off.
At the sound of male’s greeting, the alpha shook his head and straightened his thoughts. Jasper. What an interesting name, again something he didn’t come across. With a smile he lowered his head in acceptance to his greeting but kept his mouth shut as the male explained his reasons for being so close to his lands. And his reason was something Mareth wanted to hear. A great member to add to the pack it seemed; largely built and well mannered, two things needed for a new pack, one that only consisted of him.
“I am Mareth Warwick.” He stated with a deep voice. Sitting down on his haunches he looked behind Jasper towards the way he came. From the look of the male and just the way he spoke, Mareth just guessed he had been a wonder like he was only months ago. Before accepting the male into his lands like he had planned to the alpha turned his head towards a scent in the wind. “If it is a home you have been searching for, allow my lands to fill your needs.” He muttered, paying close attention to the incoming sounds.
Out of nowhere a female flew to his feet, as if bagging him to take her right then and there. He grinned at the thought of such an act, looking her over with a surprised expression. She too had a white pelt, was the artic close by or did he just attract this coat color. Not that color matter. His muzzle wrinkled slightly as the feeling of disrespect filled his mind. As she spoke her name and asked to join as well. Mareth just smirked. Two in one day. More would be better but whatever. He’d take all he could get, with the monsters only kilometers away they’d be safer under his care.
“Icebreaker? What an interesting name.” He muttered before standing up. “Welcome to the pack.” Was all he said before turning away and heading back the way he had come, sniffing the ground as he went. Was it Icebreaker that had made the sounds before? Now that he had spoken to who had called him, it was time to make sure nothing had entered his lands. “Follow me. I shall show you these lands..” he almost ordered as he stopped briefly to check on the two.

Jasper kept his eyes locked on the alpha before him, cautious of the brute. His bright green eyes looked over the strange male before him. The mask on his face looked like that of a raccoon, which was something he had never seen. He had seen lots of odd markings before, but nothing like his. It was rather strange, but of course he would never say that out loud. That would be disrespectful and he most certainly was not that at all. Though sometimes others would mistake him for being easy or a pushover, but he was far from that as well. Never was he a pushover and never would he be. Jasper always held his ground on things that he believed in. He might know his place, but he wasn't about to roll onto his back for anyone. He still had his own mind and his own beliefs after all.
As Jasper introduced himself to the alpha, he noted the slight bow of the alpha's head. That was a good sign at least, it meant that he was accepting his greetings for now. Now he very much doubted that the male would attack him. In fact he noted a smile on the brute's maw that suggested the complete opposite. Once Jasper had finished speaking, he shut his mouth and stared at the alpha. There didn't seem to be any other wolves on these lands, at least none that he could smell. So he assumed that the pack was new, in which case the chances of him being accepted were much higher. Of course his manners certainly would help him. Most alphas appreciated when a newcomer was polite and eloquent with their greetings. His auds twitched and he let his tail flick behind him as he waited to see what the alpha would say.
Mareth Warwick. Never before had he heard of a wolf that had two names, and two strange names at that. He tilted his head to the side a bit, wondering why the alpha had two names instead of just one. He knew that the first name was not a military ranking, so he was curious now. But he wasn't sure if he should ask, at least not right now of course. Jasper's ears pricked up and the fur on his back rose as a soft howl rang out from somewhere not far off. His muscles tensed with anxiety as he lowered his head, trying to keep his cool. He glanced at the alpha as he heard the words he muttered and simply bowed his head respectfully. "Thank you Sir" he said quickly. His head turned and his bright green orbs looked around, but only for a moment.
Just as he was turning his head a female suddenly came to stand by the two. He forced back a growl at her sudden appearance, not allowing anyone to hear it. His fur was still bristled as the small female practically threw herself at the alpha's feet. Why not just roll onto your back he thought to himself with disgust. He had never liked very submissive wolves, he liked strong and confident females. Not that he was even interested in females right now anyway. He shook his head and simply stared at the two other wolves. He actually found her actions rather rude, charging in on their conversation like that. She didn't even bother to excuse herself, no manners at all. His nostrils flared and he snorted, turning his bright green orbs away and looking into the forest. He wanted nothing to do with a submissive and ignorant female.
Movement in the corner of his eye made him turn and look back to the alpha. His tail flicked and he lifted his head quickly, seeing the other brute begin to walk away. He tilted his head to the side curiously and only took a small step forward. His jaws parted and his tongue lolled out of his mouth, panting softly. As Mareth turned back to them, he pulled his tongue back in and clamped his jaw shut. He nodded his head respectfully and quickly walked forward, catching up to the alpha and standing by his side. He made sure not to stand directly even with the alpha, but to stand a bit behind him. His auds stayed alert as he waited to follow his new alpha, interested to see the lands that were now his home.

[bg=000000][atrb=width,450,true][atrb=border,0,true] Her black ears flicked as she stood there looking at the two males. She wasnt quite sure what to do. She looked at the other male and snorted some, she had a feeling that he would be something to worry about, She could tell that he already didnt like her. No matter, she was after a bigger prize, she wanted the alpha. She knew rankings and alphess ment the top of the pickings. She stood up rather straight and shook her white head. She flicked her ears as she watched as the alpha rose to his feet and told them to follw him so he could show them the lands.
Ice had already seen the lands. She wasnt interested in that, she wanted to get to the alpha. She sighed and then watched as the other male quickly caught up and stayed close to the alpha. She rolled her eyes and snorted. What did he think the alpha was gonna do, leave him and forget. She snickered as she rose to her paws and headed after the alpha. She trailed behind him looking at this and that and taking in all the scenery tht was around her. She kept her eyes on the two white males that were infront of her. One she wanted to get to the other, she could have cared less now. She could tell that the male wasnt to happy about her being there but what did she care, he was just another pawn in the game.
She soon picked up and walked on the other side of the alpha, though she was very careful not to get to far head of him yet she stayed right next to him allowing him to be just a few steps ahead. She knew her limits and she always walked along the edge of them. thought it may seem bold and brave but she had to prove that she wasnt a submissive wolf. She wanted to prove that she was alphess material and that was how it was done. Now that other male, he could prove to be a good beta but only time would tell. She looked at the alpha as he kept walking. He seemed distraught almost, like he had other things on his mind. Whatever it was Ice needed it to leave the alpha's mind

The scent of pine was always a welcoming thing to him; its calming aroma just seemed to work for him, for some odd reason or another. The trees continued to dance just like they had when he had walked past them only moments before. He walked quietly; each step was taken with care and his body stance showed every bit of power he packed. The movements in his walk were smooth as the wind itself and although he seemed to not pay too much attention to the two new comers to his land. Mareth was in-fact feeling the air around.
The tension was too high for his liking and it was all too obvious to him that these two would prove to be a problem together. As much as he would love for everything to go smoothly, he was sure the barring of his fang a few times would be needed to keep their minds in the right mindset. Which would be fine if it wasn’t too often. Jasper would be less of a problem to him, Mareth figured. The male kept his tongue and respected others space while Ice Beaker was opposite.
Jasper soon trotted up along side the stripped male’s side and the moment he did Mareth glanced over and seemed to give him a reassuring look. Attempting to try and comfort the other male’s uneasiness toward the female. There was no reason why Jasper should feel like he needed to protect himself from something so simple; it was Mareth’s job and he needed to get his point out.
As they continued one their way, Mareth allowed his head to lower as he sniffed the ground. It was pretty obvious that Ice Breaker had already been trekking around in this area of his territory. Pulling his ears back he rose once again and snorted. What was done was done and the sound he had heard while making his way to Jasper was obviously her slipping up and stepping on something. Wrinkling his muzzle only for a moment he turned to look over his shoulder at the female.
Ah well. “So Jasper. I don’t mean to dig but you seem to have traveled quiet a long time from the scents that you carry. How long have you been walking?” Mareth questioned as he turned his attention back towards the direction he had chosen. Once again sniffing the air for a certain scent.
While he waited on the male’s reply, Ice Breaker joined them, placing herself on the other side of Mareth. He slightly turned his head to look at her, giving her a sniff before straightening himself. Rolling his shoulder’s back, the alpha continued his search for food.

The female seemed to suddenly become a bit braver, standing tall now. His bright green orbs rolled at her and he simply turned his full attention back to Mareth. He didn't care whether the female liked him or not, she meant nothing to him. The fact that they were in a pack together was the only thing that would ever give them reason to speak. Otherwise he would most likely never purposely go to her and start a conversation. Besides he very much doubted she would even bother with him. The alpha was large and well, alpha. He had power, and most females would always choose that over anything. He groaned to himself for even bothering to think in depth about any of it.
As the alpha announced that he would show them the lands, Jasper felt eager. He wanted to look around the lands, to explore his new home. He followed obediently behind Mareth, not bothering to take another glance at the female. He honestly didn't care one way or another what she did. His tail swayed behind him as he walked on the alpha's side. His green orbs wandered over the area surrounding them. The lands were nice, and there seemed to be quite a bit of prey here. It seemed that he had finally chosen a good home for once.
His auds twitched as they all walked in silence through the lands. It was rather peaceful, but at the same time a bit uncomfortable. Typically he liked silence and being alone. But he wasn't alone at the moment. He was with two other wolves, one whom was alpha and another who was only interested in the alpha. In fact, it seemed that he was the 'odd man out' so to speak. A third wheel in a way, which he didn't at all feel comfortable with. His auds slanted back and he lowered his head, letting out a frustrated sigh. His eyes moved back and forth between the wolves he walked with and then lands around them.
His auds pricked forward and he turned his attention to Mareth as he spoke finally, breaking the silence. He tilted his head to the side a bit and took a moment to thinking about his response. "To tell you the truth Sir i'm not sure any more how long it has been" he admitted to his alpha. It was the truth, he couldn't even remember all the lands he had been to. "It has been at least a year, this much I know" he confirmed. He felt stupid for not knowing the answer, how could he not remember how long he had been traveling? He supposed it was because he hadn't come into anything of significance or worth remembering.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=width,460,true] | [atrb=background,http://i37.tinypic.com/18k9ck.png] Ice's body shifted some as she looked around and picked up the scents that laced the ground. He sure had made himself known, but why did he not do it along the border where she came threw. He must have missed that point. He was probably off doing other things and didn't really care to much about the border. She yawned and then shook her head some as she walked next to the alpha. Her gaze went to the other white male and she kinda snorted at him. He was nothing to her, just another male who was in her way in her eyes. She looked at the alpha as he had glanced at her and then went to speak with the white male. She growled softly and then flicked her tail as she stood there. What was she chopped liver, what was so special about the male that he wanted to speak with him first.
She walked away from the two males and laid her slim body down on the ground and pulled her tail close to her body. She rolled her shoulders as she laid there on the ground and watched the males chat. She had her black ears pulled back against her head as she laid her head down on her paws and watched them. She wasn't to happy about being pushed aside and ignored but there wasn't much she could do, it seemed that males would always be first on the list no matter what. She sighed and then closed her ice blue eyes and rested for a moment. it was something that was needed, she had been walking for a while now and just now got to rest.
She laid there for moments and then jumped up as she had a flash back. She took a deep breath and then whined some. Stupid flash backs she grumbled as she stood up and looked around. Nothing had changed but what was she expecting the world to burst into flames as she slept. She folded her black ears against her head as she stood there now. She was not sure what to do. The alpha was busy and there were no other wolves to talk to so she decided to walk off and head into the woods where there would be a creek. She padded softly threw the ground and then stopped a small creek and then knelt down and lapped up the cooling water. She stood up and looked around
She sighed and then pawed at the ground and licked her lips as she stood by the water. She enjoyed the water, it was calming. She sat down and curled her white tail around her paws as she looked down at the slow moving water. She soon curled her self down on the ground and laid her tail around her face and waited for something to happen anything really.

[bg=3d9c40][atrb=width,500,true][atrb=border,0,true] "To tell you the truth Sir I’m not sure any more how long it has been"
So his hunch had been right. This male was from some far off place, most likely leaving his old pack for some reason or another. That was why most ended up as loners or at least it was the cause of his solitude. But as all wild wolves knew life as a loner was harder then life as a pack. Hunting on your own is almost impossible, at least big game and even still the chances of getting a meal, very slim.
"It has been at least a year, this much I know"
When Jasper added in the amount of time he figured he had been alone. Mareth gave the guy a little more credit then he had already. Lasting so long without the stimulation of others, he was pretty impressed. But he wouldn’t say nor show this. He gave a nod before replying with a quick.
“I’ve been there too.”
Of course as the two male’s conversation Icebreaker seemed to grow more, annoyed with it. He hadn’t really acknowledge her since the met up with the two at the boarder. But what could he say. She sort of pissed him off when she walked over his markings, more so because he hadn’t cared to go chase her off. Flashing her a smile as she walked away to get a little drink of water. The alpha followed behind slowly.
Stopping a few feet away and jumping onto a rock he glanced down at the two. Looking them over carefully. Sitting on his haunches he yawned. “Any of you hungry? I haven’t had anything good to eat in a while.” He said. Trying to make a conversation that both could join into.

[bg=0d100e][atrb=width,500,true][atrb=border,0,true] Destiny likes to play favorites. It's the ones she loves that she lets alone. . . . Understand, understand, understand... How long had it been? How long had she been wandering on her own, directionless? He had taught her how it felt to live in the place in between places; the strange quiet of belonging nowhere, the cool freedom of answering to no one, and the sacred truth of a single alliance. This... This was different. Since he had left her - or had she left him? - living was hit and miss. She didn't know where she fit. And right now, she didn't know where she was, and she was beginning to wonder if she ever did.
. . . What did you say? she thought, her small, underfed frame crouched in the scrub, her golden yellow eyes fixated on a fat, round-cheeked squirrel scratching absentmindedly at the rotten, spongy shards of a fallen pine. "Downwind," you said, "always downwind, Damien." Her mouth watered. It had been days since she had eaten, and even then, her last meal was the half-rancid remnants of an unfortunate young fox that lost its bid for a burrow to a badger. Her long, lean legs trembled, wanting so much to spring and snap up the tiny morsel - but it was still too far. She crept forward, her body hovering steadily over the ground, only her broad, white-socked paws carrying the motion. A child of destiny, a cruel twig snapped beneath her weight. "No!" The silver-backed squirrel shrieked and bolted, and Damien lurched forward, vaulted over the log, and gave chase. The clearing disappeared behind them, and the squirrel shot up into a sapling and leaped onto the thick trunk of a pine. But Damien had skidded to a halt, a startled yelp breaking loose from her lips.
. . . "There is only one concern greater than food," she thought, his voice replaying in her mind as if her ears were collecting his voice again. "Other wolves." The scent marking was unmistakable, even to her. Through their wanderings, skirting the territories of powerful packs and dangerous loners, he had taught her well - he had taught her how to stay away. How to get close... well, those were lessons learned only by experience - and that was something she did not have. Intuition was her only ally here. Her dark gray pelt felt hot beneath the glow of the sun as she approached the marked sapling, sniffing at it gently, like a fresh spring pup investigating a porcupine - not entirely convinced one way or the other in terms of its malice. The thick scent, sweet like oil and pungent as deer hide tanning in the sun, filled her head - part lure, part warning.
. . . As if to confirm her suspicions, faint voices reached her ears. Unfamiliar voices that, all at once, piqued her insatiable curiosity and tempted her to flee. She had wandered far closer this time than ever before to the home of a pack - and this time, she was alone. He was not there to nudge her with his shoulder in the right direction. He was not there to remind her how dangerous the world was. He was not there to protect her. He was not there. She felt suddenly empty - yet, hiding in the background... there was boldness. She wanted to know, and she did not want to be alone anymore. He was gone, but she was here. Damien turned her golden eyes toward the sky, and panted at the sun, squinting. The dark gray tearstains, forever trenchant upon the mottled gray mask of her face, seemed to darken in the contrast of the light. "You said to be brave," she whispered, as if he were there to hear her. Her wet nose twitched in the air, as if she expected to catch his scent on the warm breeze.
. . . There was no response, of course. She twitched her long, thin tail, brushing the blades of grass swaying at her sinewy legs. She was still a pup in so many ways. She was afraid. She did not know where destiny was leading her this time - destiny had already taken so much away from her. "I know who I am," she murmured, nodding, as if answering a question only she had heard. I'm here now, and you aren't. But I can't be alone forever. I was never like you, she thought. Damien turned to the forest, breathed deeply, and released one long, low note, entreating entry. She had never felt that her future was up to her; but he had taught her one thing. "Circumstance is only overcome by choice."
Where do I go from here? Someday you'll understand.

[bg=1e2c46][atrb=width,400,true][atrb=border,0,true]He had to think long and hard about how long it had actually been since he had been alone. A year sounded like such a long time when it came out of his mouth. He should know exactly how long it had been, but Jasper had done his best to forget. It seemed he was a lot better at it than he thought. Actually it was a rather depressing thought to realize how long he had been without others. Wolves are not naturally lone animals, preferring to be in a pack setting. Though it also made him look good that he had done so well for himself alone. It was time for him to be a pack animal again, and this is the pack he had finally chosen.
His head tilted to the side as Mareth admitted that he had also been where Jasper was. So their alpha had been a loner himself, a nice thought actually. He could see Icebreaker break off from them and walk towards the water. His nose wrinkled and he snorted, not caring that the female had went off on her own. She was ignorant and he didn't at all care for her. In fact if she left it wouldn't bother him in the least, he might even be happy about it. His auds slanted back a bit and he lowered his head in defeat as Mareth headed in the direction of the female. Obviously he was not going to be rid of her any time soon, so he would have to deal with her. He followed a bit behind the alpha, standing far enough away from Icebreaker to be comfortable.
His bright green eyes flashed from Icebreaker to Mareth and he sat back on his haunches, his fluffy tail curling around his side. He gave a soft shake of his head to the alpha's question but looked up at him. "No, but if you are I will gladly go on a hunt" he said. Even if he wasn't hungry, he did always like to hunt. Running was something he liked to do, and hunting was like a sport to him. He was a large brute and could be very useful on a hunt. Though if the alpha wanted to go on his own than Jasper would stay here. Well maybe not right here, he might explore the lands a bit more.
His auds twitched at a new sound coming from the distance, though it didn't seem too far off. His head lifted high and he sniffed at the air, trying to catch the scent of the new wolf. He couldn't get any scent just yet, but he knew that the alpha would either call the wolf forward or go meet him or her. Either way Jasper had a feeling that he would be meeting this new wolf very soon. He just hoped that the wolf was nothing like Icebreaker, he couldn't take two ignorant females. |
